Typhoon Shanan made a landfall yesterday 28 of August in southwestern Japan close to Kagoshima with gust winds of 180 km/h. The wind was strong enough to even blow over moving trucks. The Typhoon is called as the one of the strongest typhoons in decades for Japan and a Level 4 evacuation advisory took place in Kyushu which is the second highest.

Almost 4 million people in the southern parts of Japan had to evacuate the cities as the powerful Typhoon entered the country, creating severe flash floods, destruction of properties and leaving thousands of people without power. As the Typhoon is slow-moving, it has already created severe flooding and landslides in Kyushu, where a new rainfall record took place. This means that more heavy rain is on the way that can reach even 600-700mm in places.

Unfortunately, Shanshan brought casualties to the southern regions of Japan. Three people, a couple in their 70s and a 30-year-old man, died in the incident and at least 94 people had significant injuries. Around 700 flights were forced to be canceled due to the severe weather. and many highways in Kyushu have closed.
Today, 29 of August, Shanshan has been downgraded to a tropical storm with wind gusts of 80-100 km/h, but as it is still powerful and a slow-moving storm it could still create severe weather and flash floods. The Typhoon is expected to gradually ease as it is moving northeastwards towards Osaka.
